LANGUAGE AND LANDSCAPE
My inspiration is landscape and our complex relationship with the land. I feel a strong physical connection with landscape and regularly walk through it, each walk creating a different receptiveness.
My BA degree project took place around the River Sid in East Devon. My aim was to capture that which cannot be captured, that is to say, a fixed impression of a forever-changing river. I am interested in stability and flux: the stability of the river’s history and permanence, and the flux of its unending variances.
Since beginning my MA in Contemporary Art Practice (2014 - 2017), I have become interested in words and naming. Words used for landscape are slowly declining. I have been studying old (often obsolete) words from the West Country and investigating their relationship with the landscape. My most recent work can be seen under the TEXT WORK heading.
Influences include the work of photographers Roni Horn, Marlene Creates and Susan Derges, as well as the land art of Ana Mendieta and Chris Drury. The textual work of Richard Long, Hamish Fulton, Jenny Holzer, Susan Hiller and Lothar Baumgarten are also amongst my inspirations.
